I am at the sewing machine, piecing the top of a quilt. It's quiet - just the two of us girls. Sister plays with her dollhouse, packing up the little dolls & their luggage for a camping trip. I hear them "talking" in the kitchen as the dolls play and get ready for bed.
All is suddenly quiet and Sister appears at my sewing table with scissors, pencil and paper. "Whatcha doing, Sissy?" I ask.
"I'm going to sew a doll. But first I need a pattrin*. You have to cut it out of paper and sew it together to make a doll."
"Ah," I say. "Good plan, girlie." And she draws her doll.
"I need help cutting it out, Mama." So I help. "Mama!" she cries. "It's a mermaid already!"
And so I set aside my sewing for some more important crafting. We dig out the button tin and find scraps of ribbon and material to dress Ruby's doll. I glue while she cuts and slowly, her little mermaid baby comes to life with eyes, a mouth, some pretties.
Mermaid. A pretty special dolly made by a special little girl.
*speaking of pattrins, my son made a pattern using his hand so he could make a plastic glove out of saran wrap and staples. :)
Very creative. I love it!
